At convention inspiration around every corner

At convention, inspiration around every corner

It’s a tale as old as the Rotary International Convention: Two members from different clubs bump into each other, start chatting, and get the spark of an idea for a project.

So don’t be shy about starting a conversation with the stranger standing next to you or someone you meet over a meal at the convention 25-29 May in Singapore. After all, two people who talked at a bus stop at the 2016 convention in Seoul went on to plan a project fair in Africa.

Members regularly share stories about chance convention encounters that lead to meaningful projects — the kind that fulfill this year’s convention theme: Sharing Hope With the World.

They have met while painting a playground during the 2012 convention in Bangkok, lingering after breakout sessions, and, of course, visiting House of Friendship booths. Members relish the chance to meet new friends from other countries to find global grant project ideas, but they also run into potential project partners from their own state, province, or district.

After making a convention connection, Rotary members from countries across the world have worked with new partners on countless initiatives, including providing ShelterBoxes to refugees, launching a Rotaract multidistrict information organization, and recycling millions of plastic bottle caps to raise money to end polio.

A Georgia club’s article about a global grant with a club in India to build toilet facilities captures the convention’s influence: “This all began at the Atlanta RI Convention in 2017.” What seed of an idea will you find in Singapore this spring?

The Rotary International Convention in Singapore will offer so many special events and exclusive experiences that you’ll want to make a plan to make the most of your time.

Come early or stay after the 25-29 May convention to take a tour curated for Rotary members or meet with potential business partners in this economic powerhouse home to so many big corporations. And be sure to register for an extra event to mingle with fellow members.

The Host Organization Committee has tours for you in Singapore and the region. Book. One convenient three-day tour in neighboring Malaysia includes a Kuala Lumpur heritage walk and a batik fabric dying workshop.

A private tour to learn about the city’s immigrants and hawker center culture includes tastings at the food markets in Chinese, Indian, and Malay neighborhoods.

Rotarians from the area invite you to Host Hospitality Night, with cultural and food events at exquisite venues in the heart of the city. At the Rotary Foundation Donor Summit, a general session-style event, members will hear stories about the impact of their support. Major Donors and members of the Arch Klumph, Legacy, Paul Harris, and Bequest societies can register on the convention site.

Rotary Youth Exchange alumni can connect and share ideas at the Youth Exchange Officers Preconvention 24-25 May.

And stick around after the convention for the Asia Pacific Regional Rotaract Conference 1-4 June. Whichever Rotary-only experiences you choose for your trip, you’ll be Sharing Hope With the World.

At the Rotary International Convention main stage, you feel Rotary’s sweeping influence while cheering with thousands of fellow members. And when you shift to smaller breakout sessions, that’s where you get to do the in-depth work of digging into focused topics that interest you. Choosing among dozens of sessions in Singapore, you’ll take away bold ideas about how to improve your club experience, your community, and the world.

You can learn ways to combine the strengths of Rotarians and Rotaractors, solve any challenges with recruiting and keeping members, and boost mental well-being — for yourself and the people around you.

Maybe you want to run a carbon-neutral club or event, collaborate with partners like Habitat for Humanity, pull in experts for project advice, or regrow Interact membership. There are breakouts that address each of those.

Get tips to make new projects and longtime initiatives even more successful and grow a lifelong love of Rotary among your club’s members. These are just some of the themes up for discussion: measuring results to show impact, building bridges among members of all ages, making the club you always wanted, and using artificial intelligence in Rotary.

Registration isn’t required for the sessions 27-29 May, but you can browse the full preliminary list on the convention website to plan how you’ll be Sharing Hope With the World. There’s even a session that fits perfectly with that theme: Spreading Global Kindness — Starting in Singapore.
