Schools are fighting period poverty
Recent figures from Caritas show that at least 12% of Flemish girls regularly do not have the money to buy menstrual products. About 5% of girls and women between the ages of 12 and 25 have already stayed away from school because they did not have enough money for menstrual products.
Among other places, boxes with free menstrual products were made available at the Sint-Maarten Campus school on the initiative of the student council . This commendable project grew from the idea that a vulnerable financial situation should not affect the educational opportunities of students. The ambition of the student council was great: breaking taboos, making the topic discussable, offering free menstrual products, seeking sponsorship, informing and sensitizing students, ...
Thanks to financial support from the local Rotary club, the project gained momentum. Accessible 'Periodboxes' were placed in three places in the school. "By offering the products in the toilets and in public places, we remove the thresholds and shame. Students have free access and can take what they need," says a motivated member of the student team.
The student council is also responsible for monitoring the correct use of the 'Period boxes', so that any possible misuse is ruled out.
Thanks to this social project with impact, young people will not have to use their own unhealthy alternatives, there will be less menstrual stress (with temporary home stays as a possible consequence) and the school will break the taboo surrounding menstruation.

Special Olympics (SO) is a global organization that organizes sporting activities for people with intellectual disabilities (as opposed to the Paralympics, which organize Games for people with physical and/or intellectual disabilities).
Special Olympics operates in 193 countries, with more than 5.5 million athletes with intellectual disabilities participating in sports training and competition in various Olympic sports.
Special Olympics Belgium currently has 20,000 athletes and can realize their Olympic dreams thanks to the support of many partners, sponsors, patrons, donors and volunteers. Sports, health and education are central to the initiatives that take place in various cities and municipalities. In this way, the organization strives to improve the lives of 165,000 Belgians with an intellectual disability. Throughout the year, sports activities and health care are organized for people with an intellectual disability, including the annual National Games , during the Ascension weekend, where 3,400 athletes, accompanied by thousands of supervisors and volunteers, come together. This is the largest inclusive sports event in Belgium .
In May 2025 , that highlight will be celebrated in Kortrijk. The Games will start with a Torch Run on 28 May 2025, followed by an opening ceremony. Over the next three days, more than 3,400 athletes with an intellectual disability will give the best of themselves in around 20 sports. They will receive support from around 1,000 coaches and 2,000 volunteers per day.
In addition, there will also be attention for the health of the athletes during the Healthy Athletes Program. Special Olympics Belgium offers 8 different health disciplines in which athletes can have themselves examined free of charge.
The event is free to attend and will conclude with a festive closing ceremony on Saturday 31 May.
In 2019, the Special Olympics Games took place in Beveren-Waas. The local Rotary club was active as a sponsor, with an information stand, and a number of member volunteers during the event. It contributed greatly to the club's reputation and image, appreciation from the municipal government, and to team building within the club.
